99 Problems but Cost Loading and Finding a Job in Spain Ain't One

One Motivation

Sometimes our problems can feel so overwhelming that we don’t even try to solve them. We just live with them—like an irritating roommate we constantly complain about but never get around to evicting. Our problems become our story, and we can all get stuck in our stories. Deciding which problems to work on may be one of the most important decisions you make, because people can lose years (or a lifetime) working on the wrong problem. - Bill Burnett

Two Thoughts on Scheduling

  • Getting more accurate plans often creates additional overhead or burden for teams. You might break up a 40-day activity into two shorter activities or implement a rules of credit system. It is true that these can give you a better forecast, but they also create more work for you. Find solutions that increase accuracy while reducing burden.

  • Understand the financials of a project. Even if you don't load or bill out of the schedule, there is a wealth of knowledge in the money. As a proxy, it can be used to determine if the project is on schedule. You can get an idea of the options available from it. It can be used to justify the addition of resources or the testing of future innovations.
