Same As Ever by Morgan Housel

Primavera P6 Baseline Mastery

A baseline isn’t just a frozen copy of your plan, it’s your promise.

Your contract with reality.

Your control system for everything that follows.

Great schedulers don’t just create baselines.

They manage them with intention.

Here’s how to operate at that level inside Primavera P6:

1️⃣ Capture the Whole Story, Build Multiple Baselines on Purpose

Your project will evolve. That’s guaranteed.

So don’t rely on a single baseline.
Create and store snapshots at meaningful milestones:

  • Original Contract Baseline

  • Revised Baselines (after design changes, owner directives, scope shifts)

  • Current Target Baseline

This gives you a clean historical record and lets you defend schedule decisions with confidence.

2️⃣ Assign Baselines Strategically, Show the Right Comparisons

P6 lets you assign:

  • 1 Primary Baseline

  • Up to 3 Additional Baselines

Use this intentionally:

  • Primary → What you’re being measured against

  • Additional → What management needs to see (revised vs actual, design vs construction, etc.)

When you control the comparisons, you control the narrative.

3️⃣ Restore When Needed, Old Plans Are Valuable Assets

One of the most underused features in P6:

Any baseline can be restored as a standalone project.

Why that matters:

  • Audit support

  • Delay analysis (TIA, fragnet development)

  • Claim preparation

  • Rebuilding the logic of an older plan

  • Reusing structure for a similar project

Smart schedulers never rebuild history from scratch they restore it.

4️⃣ Keep Your Baselines Clean Future You Will Thank Present You

A cluttered baseline list is a recipe for chaos.

Every 30–60 days:

  • Review what exists

  • Delete what’s irrelevant

  • Rename with clarity
    (e.g., “BL1 – Original Contract – 2024-01-15” beats “Baseline 1” every time)

Clean data = clean decisions.

The Bottom Line

Strong baseline habits separate technicians from strategists.

When you curate your baselines with intention, you shift from reacting to issues…
to anticipating them, explaining them, and leading through them.

Stay proactive. Stay disciplined. Stay in control of the plan.

Demystify a P6 Feature

Copy and paste this prompt into ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude.

Act as a field-savvy construction scheduler with a gift for making complex tools feel intuitive. Your task is to demystify a specific Primavera P6 feature by translating it into clear, accessible guidance that a field engineer with an 8th-grade reading level can understand and apply.

The context is helping field teams and junior schedulers build confidence with P6 through simplified, real-world explanations. For example, previously you explained “Activity Codes” by starting with why they help projects run smoother, then gave four field-friendly steps to use them, a real jobsite scenario where they saved time, and wrapped with a big-picture insight on schedule clarity.

Format your response with: (1) Why it matters, (2) Four actionable steps, (3) One real-world example, and (4) A big-picture takeaway. Use a friendly, plainspoken tone that echoes Micah Piippo’s practical, no-jargon teaching style. Before you begin ask me 3 questions to help improve your answer.
