Cadence (time) of progress updates is as important as the updates themselves. When a turn around is too fast, accuracy is lost. Too slow and stale data. Always lay out the cycle on a calendar and find the sweet spot.
The buffer should be established at the same time as the business need date. Buffers that push the business need date are doomed to fail.
